Mangalore: U. Mahesh Kumar, assistant director of Fisheries department (Under minister Asnodkar) Clarified on Monday that his department could only monitor (keep on eye on events and report violations concerning CRZ rules to the concerned authorities, but had no power to stop such violations.
He was delivering a lecture on new notifications related to Coastal Regulations Zone (CRZ) at the Kanara chamber of Commerce and Industries(KCCI) on November 28.
He revealed that CRZ rules were made to protect the interests of fishermen and such other Coastal Communities, to protect Coastal ecology, and promote only sustainable development on shores.
He said there 5 categories in CPZ areas which are within 500 metres of the high tide line towards land, 200 metres from rivres during a tide, and 12 nautical miles into the sea.
Certain industries like mining and fish processing are not allowed in these categories. Dumping Waste also is prohibited, Kumar informed.
