Bangalore: On Tuesday early morning hours, people on the move in the busy Gandhi bazaar in southern Basavangudi area, were frightened to see the market place like a desert, but were satisfied later at the turn of events in their wandering pet places. It was clean.
There were no roadside unauthorized stalls of vegetables, fruits and flowers of vendors in row upon row in an intense market area on the footpaths and close to busy roads where vehicles(buses and 2-wheelers) moved incessantly, during the day.
The BBMP authorities stormed the Gandhibazar main road at 11PM(midnight) with JCB machines on Tuesday and cleaned up all the hurdles of Vending stalls and sales goods there, during the night to present a large night time robbery next morning of markets by the mega municipality.
The vendors might have felt that it was their birthright to sell their materials on roadsides and footpaths on either sides for years, but with police watch, the work of cleaning up the busy area was carried out without any impediment, or protest in one night.
Now, northern Malleshwaram main road(Sampige Raste) awaits a similar legal clean-up process to keep roads free for pedestrians, especially around the famous 8th cross locality up and down. Citizens will feel the loss of markets on footpaths but heave a sigh of relief to walk or hurry up freely on empty foot paths.
