Mangalore: The Cask (Catholic Association of South Kanara) is once again in the news, after it turned away retired Justice M.F. Saldanha as its head in city, a few months ago.
Its accounts are in shambles and it is deceiving the Government on payments of tax, while gobbling up huge amounts from foreign and Indian donors.
The Mangalore Bishop Aloysius Paul D’Souza has been its great patron, living in luxury, while common people suffered as Christians around him in city.
The Income tax department has now responded to the Issue of 3 circulars on June1, June 6 and June 9 earnings of 2011 against the Cask nominated representative, Marcel Montreo and its president Derek Lobo in 2011, about tax due on its 3 earnings, of Rs. 6,38,600(by sale of liquor), Rs11,900(from America and Canada towards Centenary Fund) and Rs.1crore(by way of donations).
The total income goes over Rs2 crores otherwise. There are no audited accounts, nor tax arrears were settled, the IT department told CASK in a notice.
The money is being deposited in bank accounts in various names of office-bearers and members, a source stated.
The department of Income Tax now decided to call the Bishop of Mangalore and CASK members for and enquiry to settle their dues.
Legal action would be taken individually, and in collective way, against all those involved, the ITD made it clear on Tuesday.
