Mangalore: A 78 year old woman (name changed) has been resurrected by Dr. H. Prabhakar, Chief interventional cardiologist at Father Muller Hospital in Kankanady in city this week, with a rare and unique endovascular procedure that was successful, and is reported to be the first of its kind in the medical history of coastal region of Karnataka.
The patient hails from Kundapur, but was ailing with chronic diabetic complaints. She was in critical health disorders since March, and had deteriorating physical conditions, along with fatigue and unbearable pain in the belly.
Dr. Prabhakar diagnosed in her a rare disease known as Abdomen Aortic Aneurysm (dilation of aorta, close to rupture, if stretched), causing irregular circulation of blood. This was a serious threat to her life and deserved an emergency attention by the kind doctor.
Instantly, he swung into action, admitted her in to the Intensive Care Unit, and formed a team of experts, to perform a very complicated endovascular procedure, by creating 2 holes in her high, passing an artificial device to prevent rupture, and restoring her blood circulation.
The entire successful procedure (operation) lasted full 3 hours and the (Christian) patient, in Lent and Easter week, is responding to the treatment, and could be discharged happily from the hospital in just 3 days from today. Dr. Prabhakar says it is a rare disorder that affects only 7 persons out of a lakh, as it is usually associated with advanced age, some hypertension, and a presence of diabetes.
Director Fr. Patrick Rodrigues has congratulated the cardiologist Dr. Prabhakar and his excellent team of about 6 doctors and nurses, and felt that the hospital was fully equipped to handle any complex cardiac procedure.
Fr. Richard Coelho complemented the team for saving the life of an aged patient
We join them in thanksgiving. It is a medical glory that they reached today.
