Mangalore: The giant oil refining company-MRPL, faced closure at least on a temporary measure, as DC ordered stoppage of Netravathi water Supply to run it. The DC has powers to do so. The in take by MRPL had been considerably reduced by last Sunday, and the huge oil Company could not recover from the shock of enforced reduction of Sarapady dam(water) collections.
The refinery used to consume 5.5 MGD of water from its own vented dam in Sarapady. By end of March water got reduced in the absence of rains, and increase in heat.
MRPL was asked to take only 1/3 of its collected waters. On April 11, MRPL Completely stopped water from the river and fell flat.
The reserve water in MRPL as on Friday is good for only one day. Unless rains arrive to fill Netravathi, MRPL can do little, so Phase 2 and 3 units were closed, on April12.
The shut-down at MRPL will reflect on Oil supply outside in the markets. The MRPL will face demurrage on delays in unlooding crude oils at sea, and refined oil supply will also be affected in a vicious circle, consequently. The Tsunami-earthquake fears came as forewarnings, on April 11.
