Kottayam : K.M. Mathews, Founder Chairman and editor of “Malayala Manorama” and a newspaper giant from Kerala, passed away on Sunday, Aug 1, morning, at his home at Kottayam, aged 93. We offer our condolences.
He was earlier PTI chairman, and built Malayala Manorama to a record circulation of over 60 lakhs, beyond Blitz weekly of Bombay. The daily he edited was read by all Malayalees educated upto SSLC and more. Kerala became all-literate in the regional language and Manorama commanded respect all over India among the regional language daily newspapers, with 46 journals, including “The Week” a popular English Weekly, are in the Manorama group at present.
The uncrowned King of regional journalism leaves a wife, a daughter, and three sons as survivors.
