Mangalore: The Jesuit institute of studies in ‘St. Aloysius’ College has frowned upon wearing burqas (black veils) by female Muslim students within the teaching Class.
In Bhatkal, the veil (burqa) system is practiced and worn by female lecturers and students in class-rooms.
However St. Aloysius College banned the practice of black veils inside the classroom by Muslim girl students.
The Christian College has ruled out black burqas worn by girl students of Muslim community inside the class-rooms. The diktat has triggered a controversy on dress codes.
The College order said that all students must dress neatly, as per the rule of an approved etiquette. The Muslim girls are forbidden from wearing a burqa either in a classroom or an exam hall.
The dress Code imposed by St. Aloysius College principal is the first condition in general regulations at the autonomous University.
But in Jamia Millia at Delhi, the Muslim girls are allowed to wear burqas to be on the safe side.
The St. Aloysius College registrar A.M. Narahari informed that the burqas are allowed on the SAC Campus and in the corridors, but not in classrooms. The lecturers wanted the veils to be removed, while teaching.
