Udupi: About 3,300 unrecognised auto-rickshaws within Udupi town council limits could fulfill their dream of getting a permit each, according to MLA, K.R. Bhat, who said a notification has been issued by authorities concerned.
Under a notification issued in 1996, only 700 auto-rickshaws could run on Udupi roads, but that was DK was the district including Udupi. Since then, population and vehicles have risen, so that you find 4,000 auto vehicles in Udupi, the MLA told newsmen on Friday.
The excess vehicles had no official permits, he quipped. The state Government is likely to raise Udupi district quota of authorised vehicles to 10,000 in a new communication meant for this district. Another 6000 autorickshaws from Taluk areas could also be allowed into the city as per order soon, he indicated.
There are no Gas Kits involved here, but metering is compulsory, MLA Bhat added. Further facilities like new auto-stands and health cards under insurance will be provided to drivers, Union leaders, and others involved.
