Mangalore : Beedi workers of the district under the aegis of the Dakshina Kannada Beedi Labour Union staged a protest in front of the Assistant Labour Commissioner’s office in Mangalore on May 17, Thursday demanding provision of revised wages to the beedi works as decided by the special committee. The protestors also demanded that the revision in wages be published in the state gazette.
Addressing the agitators, B Madhava, President of the Union said the revised wages were not provided to the workers even two months after the committee decided that the workers should get a minimum of Rs 116.20 for rolling thousand beedies.
Even in Udupi, the beedi workers staged a protest under the aegis of the Udupi District Beedi Workers’ Union affiliated to the CITU. A protest march was also taken out to the Taluk Office and a memorandum submitted to the Tahsildar highlighting their demands.
