Mangalore : National Women’s Front (NWF) vice president A. S. Zainaba, said even though the Dowry Prohibition Act of 1961 is being in implemented, the dowry deaths and female feticide are increasing.
She was speaking at a women’s convention held in Town Hall on May 21, Monday. She also said that most of the time men are very careless about the plight of the bride and her parents and demand dowry to gain money easily.
She said that dowry is merciless act; hence modern men and women must work against such practices and create awareness among youth to stop this menace.
Later in the panel discussion, the members of the organisation spoke on women, dowry, and empowerment.
They also urged the girls and their parents to boycott marriages involving dowry.
Fatima Naseema, general secretary of NWF, Dildar Bhatkal, national secretary; Shahida Aslam, state president; Khairunnisa Sayyed, convener of Aasare Women’s Foundation; Sameena Malar, district president; and others were also present.
