Mangalore : The Mangalore Mahanagara Auto Rickshaw Chalakara Sangha in association with DK District Auto Rickshaw Drivers Association, Karnataka State Auto Rickshaw Drivers Federation, Minorities Auto Rickshaw Drivers Association, Karnataka Rakshana Vedike organized Mangalore City Corporation Chalo programme, demanding that the authorities concerned must set up more auto rickshaw stands in Mangalore on May 25, Friday.
Addressing the protestors in front of MCC, Advocate and president of the sangha, Ivan D’Souza, said that Mangalore has around 5,600 auto rickshaws, but the government has notified only 75 stands for these auto rickshaws. Hence the MCC must register over 300 permanent auto rickshaws stands in 60mwards coming under MCC limit.
He also urged the MCC to implement the auto rickshaws stands with asphalt or interlocks and surround with required barricades.
CITU leader L T Suvarna said that the MCC must provide park auto drivers with drinking water and toilet facility. He said that the commissioner has earlier assured to fulfill all the demands of the auto drivers, but till date no facility has been provided.
Later the protestors handed over the memorandum to MCC joint commissioner Srikanth Rao. In reply Mr Rao said that the demands of the auto drivers will be discussed in the next standing committee meeting to be held at Council Hall and the problems will be resolved, he said.
The auto rickshaw driver’s undertook a padayatre from Urwa Stores to the DC’s office, after giving a brief stop at the Mangalore City Corporation.
