Mangalore: Mechanized boat fishing ban in the coastal districts has come into force on June 15, Friday. The 57 day ban will end on August 10 in DK and Udupi districts, while in Uttara Kannada district the ban will end on July 31.
Though there is no restriction for traditional country boats during the period, at the same time venturing into fishing in rough seas during monsoon is dangerous. The government in the meantime has warned mechanized boats against venturing into fishing by violating the ban order stating they would be deprived of subsidized diesel supply and other amenities.
Already, hundreds of boats have anchored in the fisheries port in Mangalore and in other ports of the district. There are also complaints that there is shortage of space for the boats to anchor.
