Mangalore : Dr N Radhakrishnan, Chairman of the Indian Council for Gandhian Studies said that the Indian education system must be strengthened by including the contents on Gandhian values in the syllabus for primary to higher education.
He was speaking at the programme held on the occasion on the arrival of ‘Gandhi Peace Bus’ which reached Canara Girls High School on Monday, July 2.
‘Gandhi Peace Bus’ is an Inter-state Gandhi Peace Bus of Kerala Gandhi Smaraka Nidhi (KGSN) held in association with the National Foundation for Communal Harmony, Government of India, and the Indian Council of Gandhian Studies, New Delhi.
N. Radhakrishnan said that the main purpose of the expedition was to encourage the youth to follow the routes Gandhi travelled under a well-designed programme. Gandhi visited 394 places between Kanyakumari and Mangalore. He also said that an education should include spirituality, tradition and modernism
Apart from political issues, Gandhian principles it propagates all issues related to environment, water management, social equality, he said.
The team first gave a visit to Gandhi Temple, Garodi, which is the only temple in the world to be dedicated to the Father of the Nation. Later the valedictory ceremony was held at Canara Girls’ High School, Dongerkery for which Mahatma Gandhi had laid the foundation stone in 1934.
N. Yogesh Bhat, Hon’ble Deputy Speaker of Karnataka Legislative Assembly participated as the chief guest on the occasion. MLA UT Khadar, Sri SS Kamath, President Canara High School Association were the guests of honour.
The convoy comprises of a passenger coach, an exhibition van, a tableau with Charka and accompanying vehicles. About 40 youth volunteers and 20 Gandhian activists are accompanying the caravan which has travelled across 1200 km visiting 68 historical places immortalized by Gandhiji’s visit. This epic journey involved hosting or participating in 32 Seminars, Discussions and interactions, honouring of Freedom Fighters and Gandhian activists, distribution of Gandhian literature, Anti Violence Oath Taking, spinning wheel live demonstration, Gandhi pictorial exhibition, screening Gandhi films and Gandhi book exhibition.
