Honnavar: In a major bank burglary reported from Karki in Honavar, thieves who broke into the Karki branch of the Kanara District Central Co-operative Bank on Thursday night have decamped with a booty including nearly 3.5 kg of gold and a cash of Rs 1.96 lakh.
It has been learnt that the bank building had no security guard and also an alarm system which proved a boon to the burglars. The thieves had entered the bank which ran from a rented building, by breaking open the front shutters and then entered the strong room and took the gold mortgaged by customers with the bank.
Senior police officials have visited the spot and special teams have been formed to trap the thieves.
