Mangalore: An MCC team led by Deputy Mayor Amita Kala will be on a drive once a month with an objective of rehabilitating the mentally ill destitutes. The destitute will be taken to the night shelters at Samudaya Bhavan, Urva or in Balambhat Hall near Sharavu Temple and another shelter for women in Suratkal.
The first of such drive on Wednesday, there was difficulty when a mentally ill woman who was found near Urva Market had to be taken all the way to Seon Ashram in Kakkinje near Belthangady after Prajna Counseling Centre refused to admit her as it does not provide shelter to the mentally ill.
Even the Wenlock Hospital in Mangalore is devoid of a psychiatry cell where such patients could be treated.
