Udupi : Police have arrested Basamma Ramanna (35) hailing from Bagalkot, who was working as a maid in the residence of Shashidhar Shetty, a businessman at Alivekodi  in Tenka Ermal, on the charges of stealing jewellery worth Rs 3.5 lakh from the house.

The theft is learnt to have taken place on the night of August 29 and came to light when the house owner went to his bedroom to sleep that night.

The stolen goods include gold weighing 18.5 sovereigns worth Rs 3.5 lakh and a cash of Rs 2000. Though initially Basamma denied her guilt, she confessed when DySP Jayanth Shetty detained her and interrogated. The woman who was working in the house since a year had earned the confidence of everyone.

Padubidri police are conducting the investigation.
