Mangalore: The High Court on Thursday dismissed a demand for a CBI probe into the alleged role of the police in the murder of human rights advocate Nashad Kashimji. The ruling has come in as a breather to several cops including city crime branch inspector HN Venkatesh Prasanna named accused in the case.
It may be recalled here that Naushad, was shot dead outside his apartment in Mangalore on Apr 9, 2009. It was also alleged that the police had warned Naushad against being the advocate for Chota Shakeel aide Rasheed Malbari.
Purushottam Pujary, senior advocate, had complained with Pandeshwar police alleging the hands of police officers. However, when it was of no help, Naushad’s wife Nusrath Jahan had moved the High Court seeking a CBI probe into the role of DySP Jayanth Shetty, police inspectors Prasanna, Valentine D’Souza and then PSI Shivaprakash in the death of her husband.
It may be recalled that the police had arrested six persons in connection with the murder of advocate within 15 days of the incident. They were Dinesh (24) from Belthangady; Rithesh (20) of Kodikal; Prathap (26) of Kavoor; Ganesh (28) of Kodikal; Subrahmanya (24) of Kadri and Shivaprakash (30) of Urwa Store.
