Mangalore : If the district administration has banned manual scavenging, it is still in vogue in Mangalore. On November 6, Tuesday two labourers were seen cleaning a manhole manually in the Kankanady area of Mangalore for as long as one hour.

Manual scavenging is banned under the Employment of Manual Scavengers and Construction of Dry Latrines (Prevention) Act, 1993.The court has asked the administrations  to make use of jet sucker machines to clean manholes. According to sources, MCC would soon be introducing two auto sucker machines costing Rs 5 lakh each to clean manholes.
