Puttur : Thieves who broke into a house at Periyadka near Uppinangady on the night of November 10, Saturday, have decamped with gold jewels weighing 35 sovereigns and cash of Rs 3.5 lakhs, all totalling to nearly Rs 10 lakhs. The house belonged to a beedi contractor named Umarabba and the theft took place when the family was away to Madavoor.
The thieves gained an entry trough the back doors and broke open three cupboards to lay hands on cash and valuables.
Meanwhile, there are reports that thieves have also made a vain bid to burgle two more houses near Periyadka the same night. The theft bid was foiled as those in the houses woke up on hearing the sound.
Though more than six cases of thefts have been reported, so far the police have traced none in connection with the burglaries.
