Mangaluru : North MLA Dr. Bharat Shetty has criticized the state government for the ongoing environmental crisis in the Phalguni River, where massive fish deaths have been reported. Attributing the tragedy to the direct discharge of untreated sewage and frequent leaks in the drainage system, the MLA has written a formal letter to the government demanding the immediate release of additional funds to local bodies for the proper upkeep of Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs).
Dr. Shetty alleged that the inefficiency of STPs within the City Corporation limits has worsened due to a lack of maintenance grants from the government. He pointed out that when generators at these units fail or remain unrepaired, sewage is diverted directly into rivers during power outages instead of being treated. This negligence, he stated, has transformed the water bodies into hazardous zones, posing a severe threat to public health and aquatic life.
Condemning the government’s role in allowing such pollution to persist, the MLA demanded that technical snags at treatment plants be rectified immediately. He urged the authorities to prioritize environmental protection by ensuring that STPs operate at full capacity with adequate financial backing. Dr. Shetty warned that without swift intervention and the release of necessary maintenance funds, the ecological damage to the region’s rivers would become irreversible.
