Mangalore : A section of bank employees are on a strike on December 20, Thursday opposing the Banking Laws (Amendment) Bill. In the district, bank employees are observing the strike under the aegis of the South Kanara District Bank Employees Association as per the call given by the All India Bank Employees’ Association, All India Bank Officers’ Association, Bank Employees’ Federation of India and National Union of Bank Employees.
The strike call was given after the Lok Sabha cleared the Banking Laws (Amendment) Bill after the government dropped some of the controversial provisions relating to permitting banks to trade in futures.
In Mangalore, several bank employees gathered outside the Canara Bank, Circle Office, Balmatta Road and staged a demonstration and condemned the anti-employee policies of the Centre. They also came down heavily on the proposed reforms in the banking sector by amending the Banking Regulation Act.
Com. PR Karanth, Joint Secretary of All India Bank Employees Association and President of South Kanara unit of the Association, Com.K.Raghava, Secretary, AIBOA and Com.K.Madhava, Joint Secretary, Karnataka Unit of Bank Employees’ Federation, Com.Vincent D’Souza, General Secretary, South Kanara District Bank Employees’ Association among others were present.
