Mangalore : The doctors of Plastic Surgery Department of AJ Hospital conducted a rare fete of reattaching the both hands of a man.

Speaking at a press meet held at Press Club on Jan 31, Thursday Dr Prashanth Marla, medical director, A J Hospital and Research Centre said that AJ Hospital had received a case where a 32 year young man who was attacked by three armed miscreants from behind at Mulky station railway track and chopped off his both upper limbs and fled away.

He said that the victim Sharath Chandra (32), a resident of Moodbidri had gathered some strength to get up and walk up to a nearest house for want of some water. It was then that his relatives and police were informed. This gruesome incident happened about 8 pm and later he was brought to the A J Hospital at around 4 am in the morning.

On the direction of doctors, Sharath’s brother went in search of both severed limbs and fortunately found them lying by the side of a railway track of Mulky station. Both the limbs were secured and brought to the hospital. He came in a life threatening critical condition of shock due to severe blood loss and was barely conscious. The situation was immensely challenging for not only to save his limbs, but his life as well. He was immediately resuscitated and the team of doctors swiftly swung into action to conduct major surgery to reattach both amputated upper limbs.

Later both limbs were rejoined successfully in an eight-hour long skilled microvascular surgery by the team led by Dr Dinesh Kadam, professor and HO, plastic surgery. The team of doctors along with Dr Kadam included plastic surgeon Dr Sanath Bhandary, anesthetist Dr Thrivikrama Tantry, Dr Rajesh Hukkeri and orthopedic surgeon Dr Shridhar Shetty, he said.

The surgery done on Sharath Chandra is successful and he is fast recovering and generally the recovery of nerve, sensation and movement will take a year, he said.

Dr Dinesh Kadam, Dr Sanath Bhandary and Dr Thrivikrama Tantry were present at the press meet.
