Mangalore : Hundreds of women dressed in black organised a silent demonstration for nearly two hours from Hampankatta Junction to University College on March 6, Wednesday evening. They opted for this novel protest with a determination to put an end to injustice and violence against women. The protestors were also seen wearing black sashes on their forehead and arms to express their protest.
Vimochana, noted activist from Vimochana said there was a need to oppose violence againt women with voices of sanity.,She also referred to the several cases of atrocities against women in the district in the name of culture.
The protestors stood in line in silence for a couple of hours, Later, as a mark of tribute to the victims of atrocities, they lighted candles.
Several organizations such as Forum Against Atrocities on Women, Vimochana, Breakthrough Foundation took part. Prominent among the participants were Sabiha Bhoomigowda, Dr Rita Noronha, Merlyn Martis Vidya Dinker, Suresh Bhat Bakrabail.
The Women in Black Movement was first taken up by Vimochana inspired by the silent rebellion which began in Tel Aviv, Haifa and Jerusalem in Israel when Israeli and Palestinian women came together to protest against the war. Here, it was first taken up by Vimochana.
