The department of information, Junior Chamber International (JCI), Suratkal and Department of Labour jointly organized seminar on ‘Child Labour a Social Menace’ at the community hall in Ganeshpur Kaikamba on June 20, Sunday.
Speaking after inaugurating the seminar, Dr K N Vijayprakash, the Commissioner of Mangalore City Corporation, said that the practice of child labour is increasing in the society due to lack information and awareness about law and constitutional rights.
He also urged the people to make use of government schemes and facilities such as free and compulsory education, residential schools and other. He also said that education and awareness is necessary for the construction of an ideal society.
Creating awareness through social movement will eradicate the ugly practice of child labour and atrocities to some extent.
Delivering the key note address on the occasion, Satyanarayan, Labour Commissioner, recalled the incident of fireworks manufacturing company, which killed 39 children dead. Compulsory education will eradicate child labour he stressed.
Karavali Janapada Thanda staged a play on child labour, on the occasion.
Shridhar Shetty, President of JCI, Suratkal, presided over the programme. Rohini, District Information Officer, delivered the introductory address after welcoming the guests. JC Datthathreya, President of MRPL Employees’ Union and Seetharam Rai were among those present.
