Kundapur : In a shocking incident a priest who was to conduct the wedding rituals of a Gram Panchayat President refused to conduct the marriage rituals, just because it was a Koraga wedding. The wedding was later solemnized with the help of another priest from Karopady.
On June 5, Wednesday,the GP Chief Sakamma’s wedding was to be held at the Trasi Hall and a sum of R s 42000 had been paid to the hall owner towards the expenses to arrange a priest and cleaning the hall.
As the families arrived with music bands and chende, the priest realizing that it was a Koraga wedding escaped saying he had to attend another function.
The families immediately informed the Gangolli police who later ensured that the wedding was held under the guidance of another present.
However, when the wedding lunch was underway, the cleaning staff too refused to do their work citing the same reason as that of the priest. Finally the cleaning work was done by some members of the Koraga community.
The Gangolli police have registered cases against the hall owner Sridhar Ganiga, priest and the women cleaners for discriminating on the basis of case. The complaint was lodged by the bride’s brother Ishwar.
