Kundapur : A 28 -year-old married woman allegedly committed suicide consuming poison at Senapura, Gangolli on Oct 6 Monday, after being tortured by her husband for a long time.

The deceased has been identified as Anitha Devadiga (28) a daughter of Heriya and Sesi Devadiga Senapura, Gangolli.

It is learnt that, two and half years ago Anitha had married to Bhaskar Devadiga hailing from Saligrama who is working as a clerk at the high court.

During the marriage Bhaskar Devadiga and his family had asked 25 sovereigns of gold from Anitha’s family. But for their daughter’s happiness they had given more than they demanded.

After leading one month of married life, Bhaskar along with his elder brother started asking to bring cash of Rs 10 lakhs from her father.

But after a month from the wedding, Bhaskar and his elder brother started asking for more. They even went to the extent of asking Anitha for Rs. 10 lakhs.

When she refused to get it they sent her to maternal home at Senapura one and half year back and never took her back. Bhaskar used to occasionally visit her when he was back from Bangalore and harassed her every time.

Reportedly, Bhaskar has visited his wife last week and assaulted her after the fight. When Anitha threatened to kill herself if he continued it, Bhaskar said that he would not care. Depressed Anitha consumed poison and breathed her last on Monday evening.

Gangolli police have registered a case against Bhaskar Devadiga.
