Mangalore : A team of doctors of Father Muller Medical College Hospital, Mangalore have granted a new lease of life to a 71 year old patient Mr. Chandran hailing from Kannur by performing a very risky and complicated life saving procedure.
The patient was ailing from heart disease had undergone a cardiac bypass surgery 10 years ago was admitted to ICU of the hospital in a very critical condition with weakness and breathlessness since one month and was referred to Chief Interventional Cardiologist Dr. H. Prabhakar.
On detailed clinical examination doctor diagnosed that the patient was suffering from a very rare disease that is aneurismal dilatation of the main blood vessel (aorta) resulting in impaired blood circulation to thorax abdomen and lower limbs which indicated large dilatation of the aorta which was on the verge of rupture and was life threatening, which warranted emergency surgery. Surgical procedure was the option coupled with complications and risk to the life of the patient. Aortic aneurysm is seen in 5.9 cases per 100,000 people.
Instantly, a team of expert doctors was formed headed by Dr. Prabhakar, Chief Interventional Cardiologist, Dr. Sayyid M.K, Cardiologist and Dr. Anand K.T., Cardio Thoracic Surgeon and they swung into action and successfully performed a novel and unique procedure called ‘Covered Stent Implantation’ without opening the thorax which lasted for 2 hours. The patient responded to the procedure and is recovering speedily and most likely to be discharged very soon.
