Mangalore : Residents of Adyar, Neermarga and surrounding areas resorted to a lightning protest on July 1, Monday morning when railway officials arrived at Adyar to close a railway crossing at the place. The officials had decided to close the crossing following Sunday’s mishap involving a mini bus and a goods train that claimed the life of a woman and injured five others including a child.
The protestors urged that the railway crossing be made an authorized railway crossing as it is not listed among regular crossings of the railway. They also demanded appointment of a security guard to man the crossing. Yet another demand was to have humps on the road here.
When villagers adopted an adamant stand and even blocked the Bangalore train for a few seconds, the Local MP Nalin Kumar Kateel arrived and stopped the railway authorities from closing the crossing. He also assured an overbridge in the area and said a meeting will be convened at Circuit House on Monday to discuss the issue. As many as 500 people participated in the protest.
