Mumbai :  Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan delivered a baby girl Wednesday morning at the luxury Seven Hills Hospital in a Mumbai suburb. Her husband and Bollywood actor Abhishek Bachchan broke the news on Twitter around  10 a.m. on Wednesday when he announced: “It’s a girl      !!!” Iconic Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek’s father, summed up his excitement tweeting: “I AM DADA [grandfather] to the cutest baby girl!!”

Mrs. Rai Bachchan was admitted to hospital late Monday night and the elated grandfather-to-be had been active on the microblogging site in anticipation of the birth. “And as I write, there is still no news from Aishwarya … your wishes and prayers with us … Thank you,” the senior Bachchan said.

Congratulatory messages poured in for Bachchan senior and his family after he announced to the world a girl was born to their clan. Close friend and producer Karan Johar wrote, “Congratulations @SrBachchan!!!! Super exciting news….all the love and happiness amit uncle!!!!” Actress Genelia D’ Souza sent her wishes to the ecstatic grandfather and grandmother Jaya: “congrats sir, I’m sure Jayaji n u r thrilled,, so so happy n lots n lots of love.”

Born in the upper echelons of Bollywood aristocracy, the youngest Bachchan has quite a pedigree to live up to. Although she is not even a day old, many are undoubtedly already expecting her to follow in the footsteps of her parents and grandparents.

Barely an hour after her birth, Baby B is already a celebrity on Twitter – words like Dada, Baby Girl, BabyB, Big B were trending minutes after the news broke. Some are already speculating about the baby’s name. “Now eagerly awaiting her name,” wrote one fan. Given the hoopla around the baby and media frenzy around Aishwarya’s delivery, the baby’s name is likely to keep tabloid pages up and running. The bookies, too, who earlier bet on the delivery date of Mrs. Rai Bachchan, may also stay busy with the guesses for the name. According to traditional Hindu practice, a “Namkarna” (naming) ceremony is usually held a few days after the birth with a ceremony conducted by the priest to take blessings of the Gods.

 Amitabh Bachchan arrived at the Seven Hills Hospital in Mumbai on Monday. Many will also be curious to see whether Mrs. Rai Bachchan will carry on acting in lead roles now that she’s a mother. For many actresses, marriage had spelled the end – or at least the dusk –  of their careers. In Bollywood, it seems, wives could not be cast in glamorous roles. But not if you’re Mrs. Rai Bachchan, who went on to star in Bollywood blockbusters after her marriage with Abhishek in 2007.

The motherhood barrier may be even tougher to surmount than the marriage one. But if there is anyone in Bollywood who can break the baby barrier that’s Mrs. Rai Bachchan.
