Mangaluru: Students of Alva’s College, Moodbidri have distinguished themselves with record-breaking performances in inter-university and national senior ball badminton championship.
In the south zone inter-university ball badminton championship held at Dravidian University, Kuppam in Andhra Pradesh from February 5 to 9, all 10 players representing Mangalore University were from the college, noted Dr M Mohan Alva, chairman, Alva’s Education Foundation.
Mangalore University has bagged the South zone title for the fourth year in succession, gaining entry in to the league stage of all-India inter-university tournament for the 14th time, where the team has won eight gold and three silver medals.
In the 63rd senior national ball badminton championship held at Gurugram in Haryana from January 5 to 9, seven of the state team players were from Alva’s Colleges and Karnataka won the title for the third time in succession.
Jayalakshmi G and Pallavi SK were adjudged ‘Star of India players’ at this meet, Dr Alva said, lauding the players and the support staff for their achievement, adding this achievement will aid the revival of ball badminton as a sport in Karnataka.
Incidentally, these students who brought laurels for the university and the state are studying in the Alva’s educational institutions under the sports persons scholarship scheme which entitles them to free education.
