Mangaluru: Alva’s Education Foundation which is well known for its achievements in the field of sports has achieved one more milestone. An Alva’s student has qualified for Rio Olympics which will commence from August 5 onwards.
Dharun Ayya Swamy of 20 years of age hailing from Tamil Nadu is the sprinter selected for Rio Olympics. He will be the youngest athlete to represent India in Rio. He has already secured two gold medals in recent Asian games. He had also secured first place in All India Athletics in 400 meters race and holds a group record in hurdles.
Alva’s institution has awarded him Rs 1 lakh for his achievement and it sponsors Rs 20000 every month for his training.
“It is for the second time an Alva’s student is participating in Olympics. Previously Satish Rai represented India in Atlanta Olympics in 1996. We are happy to say that four of Alva’s students are participating in Rio Olympics,” said Dr M Mohan Alva, President of Alva’s Education Foundation.
The other three Alva’s students who will represent India in Rio Olympics are Indrajit in shot put, former students Poovamma and Ashwini Akkunji in 4×400 meters relay.
