Mangalore: When the district administration was busy celebrating the International Women’s Day at Town Hall on March 8, Thursday, the Anganavadi workers staged a protest in front of the venue and waiting to submit the memorandum stating their demands.
The Anganavadi organized a silent protest rally which began from Dr Ambedkar (Jyoti) circle and culminated near the DC office.
The deputy director who said that she would come and receive the memorandum at the town hall during the women’s day programme was seen busy with the stage programme in inside the hall. The disappointment workers were seen waiting in the hot sun for nearly 2 hours at the premises.
Although many requested DD to come out for a while and receive the memorandum, she was hardly bothered and was not willing to come out. Finally when she came out after the programme concluded the workers were not ready to speak to her and started shouting slogans against her and continues their fight for their rights.
The president of district Anganvadi Aruna Puttur said that the officers with the political power were posting the workers to non-departmental work.
She also said that over the past 2 years, the workers had been fighting for getting salary. She urged the government not to divide the money between central and state categories but to implement the funds in the next budget in order to get salary before 5th of every month.
She also said that DD had instructed them not to invite anganvadi workers from Puttur, Sullia and places for the programme.
Above 300 Anganwadi workers participated in the protest.
