Udupi: A girl from J.C Nagar, Bangalore who lived with her parents but got married at a minor age against her wishes when she was 16, had to run away from her. She came to Udupi at 17½ years and called a press conference held on Tuesday when she revealed her distress at the hands of a regularly harassing husband whom she did not like.
Annapoorna not yet 18, told reporters that She started from Bangalore on March 28 after writing her annual examination scripts. The husband was none other than the younger brother of her own mother. She had complained to the High Grounds Police about her so-called husband’s torture to her, but nothing useful happened.
She roamed around in Dharmasthala. Radha Das, a vice-president of Mahila Mandals’ union provided her succor, when mother did not support her.
Annapoorna wanted to commit suicide in distant Kundapur. She would live independently or die. She sought newsmen’s help.
Radha Das informed that she was conveying the poor plight of Annapoorna to her parents and uncle who is also her husband. A compliant is made to SP, Dy CP and the department of women’s welfare. Das said the minor married girl needs elderly and safe protection from harassing relatives.
