Udupi: Vijaykumar Hegde, President of the Anti-Nagarajuna Action Committee (Nagarjuna Virodhi Horata Samithi) has said that a hunger strike would be staged in front of the Udupi DC office on August 27 opposing the government decision to give its green signal for the operation of the second unit of the controversial UPCL thermal power plant.
Speaking to reporters here on August 22, Wednesday, he said the power generated by the plant is supplied to Udupi and DK district just because there are no transmission lines to transfer power to Hassan.
He also said that the power transmission lines to transmit power generated from the second unit, would lead to destruction of environment in the Western Ghat area.
Hegde also called upon elected representatives including local MP Jayaprakash Hegde, District Minister Kota Srinivas Poojari, ZP chief Katapady Shanker Poojari and others to make clear their stance on the project.
He also drew the attention of the authorities towards the irreparable damage which the first unit has already done to local environs and demanded that instead of having a thermal power plant, there should be a gas based plant.
