Mangaluru: The Indian Army’s sailing team is currently on an expedition of the Indian Peninsula. The 3,500-nautical mile ‘Round the Indian Peninsula’ expedition is being undertaken by 55 sailors comprising personnel from Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers (EME) and Artillery units.
This is to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Corps of EME.
The expedition on Bavaria Class 44-foot sail yacht is led by Major Alok Kumar Yadav, who is also the Secretary of EME Sailing Association. Five women officers — Captain Shweta, Major Mukta Gautam, Captain Rashmil, Captain Priya and Lieutenant Sona l — are part of the team. The expedition started from Haldia port in West Bengal on October 21 and will end in Porbandar, Gujarat, on November 30.
Major Yadav told reporters here recently that though many expeditions have been conducted on the west Coast, it was the first time that a team was venturing on the east Coast, which is quite challenging.
Along with fishing activity between Kochi and Mangaluru the team noticed a lot of plastic floating on the coast, he said.
The seafarers, he said, looked excited with their expedition and fishing vessels did come close to watch their boat.
