New Delhi: The first of the Gold medals in Guang Zhou today went to China on winning a local game Wushu. Japan and Iran took silver and bronze. In shuttle badminton Saina Nehwal had her way, in singles. Jwala Gutta of Punjab and Ashwini Ponappa made a remarkable recovery to win 2-sets to one in their opening match. All other players lost their games. In Sooker, India beat Singapore 3-0 to enter quarter finals.
There are 476 medals at stake in the 16th Asian Games. Indian shooters brought silver medals in shooting on the first day. Gagan Narang, the flag-bearer, won 2, Abhinava Bindra one and Sanjeeva Rajput also secured one medal. China took a gold and South Korea a bronze against India.
In all other competitions of the day, India belonged to losers.
