Udupi: A series of traditional games peculiar and only prevalent in Tulunadu during the rainy month of Aati or the Ashadh, when it pours outside and everyone is inside the house, known as ‘Atida gobbulu’ (Games of rainy Month) was organized by Lions’ Club of Kapu (Kaup) and JCI-Kapu besides V.S.S Bhajan Mandal on a on Sunday, July 31 on a silted field of Vasudeva Swamy temple in Kapu, near Udupi.
Running races for men, Kabaddi, tug of war in ropes and sack races were held. Women had running races, weaving ‘Tendu’ (beedi) leaves, rope tugging and musical chair contest. Children below 15 years joined in musical chairs, lemon and spoon race, tug of war on rope and biscuit–eating competition. For others (general public) it was a running race on the silted field and a “treasure hunt” in the contest list.
Lions Governor Indrali Jayakumar Shetty opened the programmes of Aati. Kaup GP Chairman Yogish Pai presided. JCI-east zone 15, President Y Sukumar started the rural games.
Folk arts scholar K.L Kundantaya gave a lecture on Tulunadu customs and history. Udaya Shetty of V.S Bhajan Mandal, Lions Club chief Harish Nayak and Kaup Jaycees chief Rajendra BK were chief guests. K.P Acharya, Vidyaniketan Correspondent, distributed the prizes to winners. Dr. K Prabhakar Shetty Chaired the prize giving pleasant ceremony.
