Udupi: A baby boy was delivered in a 108 ambulance when the pregnant mother was being transferred to Udupi hospital due to labour pains on Thursday, Dec 13th. The quick response from the staff nurse/emergency medical technician accompanying the pregnant woman provided the much needed assistance in the normal delivery of the child.
Post the delivery, both the mother and her infant were shifted to the Koosamma Shambhu Shetty Memorial Haji Abdulla Government Mother and Child Hospital and are said to be healthy.
According to the emergency medical technician Kashinath Pujar who accompanied the pregnant woman, the ambulance at the Malpe Primary Health Centre received a call at 10.05 a.m. that the 23-year-old woman, identified as Asha had developed labour pains at the workers colony at Eshwar Nagar in Manipal. The ambulance reached the colony at around 10.25 a.m. and Asha was shifted into the vehicle.
The delivery
As the 108 ambulance bearing the pregnant woman in labour pain was nearing the Udupi City Bus Stand, her water broke. Hence, Mr Pujar immediately assisted Asha in the delivery of her baby in the ambulance itself. Thus, Asha delivered her baby boy at 10:55 am in the ambulance.
After the successful delivery, the mother along with her new born infant was shifted to the Koosamma Shambhu Shetty Memorial Haji Abdulla Government Mother and Child Hospital.
“Both the mother and baby are healthy. The baby weighs 2 kg and 370 grams,” informed Mr Pujar.
