Bangalore: All the six accused in the infamous gang rape of NLSIU student in October last year have been sentenced to life imprisonment. The second fast track court, which had convicted the six on Wednesday, announced the quantum of punishment on Friday.
Maddura, 20, Dodda Eeraiah, 19, Shivanna, 20, Eeraiah alias Eera, 20, Yaliyaiah alias Kumara, 23, and Rama, 21, have been convicted. All the accused, except Eeraiah, are natives of Metari Doddi village of Kailancha Hobli in Ramanagar district. Eeraiah is a native of Hunsur in Mysore.
Judge K B Sangannanavar, who passed the order, also penalised all the six to pay a fine of Rs 6,000 for each sections they were charged with. Further, the judge said that the Criminal Injury Compensation Board should look into providing compensation to the rape victim.
All the six, who were lodged in Parappana Agrahara central prison, were brought to the court on Friday afternoon. They were sent back after the judge had passed the order.
Public Prosecutor S V Bhat had argued on behalf of the government and Inspector of Jnanabharathi police station, Balaraju, had filed the chargesheet.
It may be recalled that on October 13, 2012 the 21-year-old student of NLSIU was with her male friend inside a car at an isolated place at Jnanabharathi campus. A gang of eight sandalwood smugglers, who had come to cut trees, noticed the couple, vandalised their car and assaulted her friend.
They later dragged the woman about 2-3 kilometres deep into the woods and gang raped her.
The police have arrested seven youths in this connection and one turned out to be a minor. A separate trial is under progress against the minor.
The eighth accused in the case, Raja, is still at large. All the accused were involved in the smuggling of sandalwood trees from Jnanabharathi campus.
