Mangalore: A seminar conducted on ‘suffering children’ (destitute), on Tuesday at Bishop Jattanha Hall in city by Karnataka Theological college (KTC) and the Diocesan chair in Christianity of Mangalore University had Prof (Dr.) Reinhold Mokrosch from Germany as guest speaker on the occasion.
The learned speaker dwelt on Billava children, and his observations on those who suffered in their childhood, as to what could be their thought on God in their adverse circumstances.
A book on Billavas and their relations with Basel Mission was brought out on this occasion and their relations with Basel Mission was brought out on this occasion a study in Kannada by Ramanath Kotekar.
His book deals with caste prejudices and suppression of people born low (as toddy- tappers) during the times of Basel (German) missionaries.
Many Billavas embraced Protestants Christian religion to Survive searching for social equality and economic betterment by breaking out tentacles of a caste system and embracing a religion that ensured freedom for them.
Dr. C.L. Furtado, Dr. Honey Cabral, KTC Principal, and Dr. J.B. Saldanha of Mu Chair of Christianity were present at the seminar attended by students and sisters of many churches.
