Mangaluru : Cattle should be transported only in such vehicles certified by the Transport Department. Those vehicles should have compartments on board to transport them. Cattle should be transported only after obtaining permission from the government authorities. Now the government has ignored all these provisions., said MP Nalin Kumar Kateel on Saturday.

Addressing presspersons after the meeting, Mr. Kateel said that the delegation urged the administration to close down all illegal abattoirs in Dakshina Kannada.

He said that the administraion should set up check posts especially on the border areas to check illegal transportation of cows and cattle. Those check posts should be equipped with CCTV cameras. Mr. Kateel said that the SPCA should take note of transporting cattle in a cruel manner. It should put an end to it.

He said that police should set up two separate squads, one under the jurisdiction of Mangaluru Police Commissionerate and the other applicable to other parts of Dakshina Kannada to curb trafficking of cattle.

The Member of Parliament said that the government should give a compensation ranging from Rs. 50,000 to Rs. One lakh to those who have lost their cattle due to theft. The compensation is to encourage them to continue dairying.

A delegation of BJP MLAs and other leaders Shobha Karandlaje, urged the district administration to curb cattle trafficking across Dakshina Kannada and activate the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), headed by the Deputy Commissioner, to implement all laws relating to the protection of cattle effectively.

They met the Deputy Commissioner, the Police Commissioner and the Superintendent of Police in view of the recent instances of cattle trafficking, which they said, might lead to communal tension, and law-and-order issues in Dakshina Kannada.
