Mangalore :If kites and singer Vijayaprakash were the stars of day one, it was the boat race which took the people to cloud nine on the second and final day of the Ullal Beach Festival -2012. Hundreds had gathered at Ullal Beach on Sunday, enjoying the weekend holiday.
The final of the boat race attracted many, as the four teams who reached the final, took all the efforts to grab the trophy. In a very close breathtaking contest, Bengare Vidyarthi Sangha won the first place, pushing down its own B team to the second place.
Ullal Mogaveera Sangha reached the third place. The race was palpable with the frenzied cheering of the enthusiastic fans crowding the shoreline. The event signified the team spirit, integration and amity of the people.
“It’s a really hair raising experience. The contest was too close as I could not even identify who won the first place,” said one of the spectator Bhavya.
Supporters took the rowers of the winning team on shoulders and took a march on the beach.
The boat race was followed by a sand art competition, where the contestants turned sand into different themes ranging from spiritual to socially relevant sculptures. The sand art, which gives the message on the ugly side of drinking alcohol acclaimed well in the competition.
The food fest organised as a part of the beach festival gave an opportunity for food buffs in Mangalore to have a taste of local as well as Chinese varieties of food. Gobi manchoori, golas of different flavours ranging from Cola to Kaalakatta conquered the hearts of hundreds.
Swimming and dancing competitions in which 20 teams were participated was also took place on the last day of the first beach festival in Ullal, organised by the Maruthi Yuvaka Mandala as a part of their silver jubilee celebrations.
Spreading the net competition was another crowd puller. The fishermen displayed their talent, at the contest. In the swimming competition, elders and children also participated.
On Saturday night
The night of inaugural day of the beach festival saw Indian music sensation Vijay Prakash from Mysore. The singer, who captivated millions of hearts with his hit numbers like ‘Pal pal he bhari’ and ‘Jai Ho’, used his numbers effectively to get into the hearts of hundreds at Ullal beach. He sung ‘Jai Ho’ and Kannnada folk song ‘Kodagana Koli Nungitha’ in the music show.-DH News
