Mangalore: Com V.A.N. Namboodri, president, BSNL Employees’ Union Delhi, inaugurated the a seminar on “present condition and waves and means to salvage it” organized by BSNL Employees ‘Union at Town Hall on May 4, Wednesday.
Speaking after inaugurating the event, he said that the BSRPE recommendations had not been accepted yet.
He explained that the company had 2,87,749 employees with an average age of 48 to 62 years as against 3,97,000 employees at the time of its creation. With the change in technology and the subscribers’ shift from landline to mobile phones, a large part of the manpower had become “irrelevant” to the current requirements, he said. The skills of majority of manpower were deemed “outdated.”
While 53 per cent of workers come under the age group of 50 to 60, about 39 per cent are aged between 35 and 49. The operating income had fallen by 22.76 per cent and the manpower cost had increased by 81.31 per cent in the last five years, he said.
Com CK Gundanna, circle secretary delivered the key note address on the occasion and said that the programmes launched in the Dakshina Kannada district must be implemented with responsibility. It is the public business and there are several problems.
He said that today, BSNL is important in the country’s security, which gives the telephonic communications throughout the country. BSNL is known for rendering good service and even today the BSNL landline is appreciated by the people compared to other mobile companies. The financial crisis of the company is in a big way and must think further whether then employees get the salary in next one year, he said.
