Bantwal : There was a unsuccessful bid to burgle the Vittalpadnur Agricultural Co-operative Bank at Kolnad on September 1, Sunday night. The incident came to light when the bank employees arrived on Monday to open the bank.
The burglars had managed to enter the bank through the window but could not break open the lockers despite using gas cutters. They then fled leaving behind the implements including gas cutter, cylinder etc.
It is learnt the bank had gold worth Rs 2 crore and cash of Rs lakh in its locker and everything would have been lost had the burglars succeeded in robbing the bank.
The Bank also had no CCTV, burglar alarm or a security guard. Vittal and Bantwal police have visited the spot. Dog squad and finger print experts were also sent. Hundreds of customers gathered outside the bank and were relieved on knowing that it was a vain attempt.
