Udupi: Imaginatively constructed and tastefully decorated caged lamps(Goodu-deepas) formed a part of Sri Krishna Math-sponsored Laksha Deepotsava(festival of a hundred thousand lamps) in the temple town, led by Paryaya Swami Laxmivara of Sirur Math.
32,000 earthen lamps over cowdung paste were lit on flat wooden stands around Car street, giving a pleasing picture of Jnana(knowledge) All lamps were lighted at ht same time.
A golden palanquin brought the festival deity to the Madhwa lake. Two chariots went round car street. Fire crackers made strong noises. Pejavar Math Swami was among the children to enjoy the occasion amid deafening sounds.
The caged lamps and hanging lanterns were in many shapes and sizes, locally made with husk and paper. There was chariot, a miniature soda-marbles creation and a half-inch high but tiny Goody-deepa among them.
