New Delhi: Karnataka will have to release 3,000 cusecs of water per day to Tamil Nadu from September 21 to 30. The Cauvery Supervisory Committee on Monday decided the quantum of release in its seventh meeting here after analysing the reports submiited by both the states.

The Supreme Court had on last Monday asked Karnataka to release 12,000 cusecs of Cauvery water per day to Tamil Nadu till September 20, leading to a lot of violent protests in Bangalore and elsewhere in the state.

“The supervisory committee took into consideration the interest of all the participating states, the inflow position, rain fall picture, daily inflow of water in the reservoirs of Karnataka, the drinking water needs of Karnataka and the need of samba crop in Tamil Nadu”, said Union water resources secretary Shashi Shekhar after the meeting.

The next meeting of the Committee will be held sometimes in October. Date of the meeting will be decided soon. The Committee will subsequently meet once in every month from February, 2017 onwards.

Meanwhile, the Central Water Commission (CWC) will draw up a new protocol of online collection of data related to rainfall and flow of water on real time basis which may be shared simultaneously with all the concerned states. The cost of developing this protocol will be shared by the three states – Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala – and UT of Puducherry.

Shekhar said, “The Committee took a detailed presentation from the chief secretaries of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Puducherry and the representative from Kerala. The committee tried to reach to a conclusion but Tamil Nadu and Karnataka did not agree to a particular figure of release of water which was based on scientific facts”.
