Mangalore : S P Changappa, Mangalore Bar Association president and convener of Cauvery Horata Samithi demanded immediate closure of crest gates to stop the flow of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu.
Speaking at the press meet held at Press Club held on October 4, Thursday said that the state is releasing 9,000 cusecs since September 29, Sunday, in compliance with a Supreme Court directive.
Thousands farmers from Mandya, Mysore and Chamrajanagara depending on the Cauvery water for agriculture are tensed by the government’s decision to release water from Krishna Raja Sagar and Kabini dams to Tamil Nadu. These regions will have 30%water scarcity and will effect on the crops such as rice and other grains, he said.
The state government has shown its irresponsibility by releasing the water to Tamil Nadu. He condemned government for notwithstanding the assurance given to protect the interests of farmers in the Cauvery basin. Further the same situation may come to the Nethravathi river he said.
Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar has betrayed farmers by walking put during the meeting held to discuss on the issue, he said.
In order to oppose this, Cauvery Horata Samithi in association with various other organization will hold a jatha on October 6 from Bahutagudde to Hampankatta via Jyothi at 12 pm and hold road blockade near Hampankatta signal at 12.30 pm.
Samithi’s co convener Dayanand Payyade, Mohan Nekkaremar, working president Sridhar Shetty, Pradeep Kumar and Sanjeeva Poojary were present.
