Mangaluru : The City Corporation Council’s special meeting held on Thursday resolved to conduct development cell meeting on Monday and later discuss Detailed Project Report on Asian Development Bank assisted Karnataka Integrated Urban Water Management Investment Programme (KUIWMIP) ‘Jalasiri,’ before giving council approval.
The primary report of the project was proposed by engineer of GKW Consult, who is technical advisor for the project, Jayaprakash. After discussions, MCC Whip Shashidhar Hegde said the Council will hold the development cell meeting and decide regarding approval after looking into Detailed Project Report (DPR).
The project is taken up under ADB Phase 2 and comprises of 24×7 drinking water supply at a cost of Rs 160 crore and underground drainage system at a cost of Rs 120 crore.
In the drinking water project 40 per cent will be grants, 50 per cent loans and 10 per cent MCC share while in underground project 50 per cent will be grants, 40 per cent will be loans and 10 per cent MCC share.
The main works under drinking water supply project includes addition of as much as 100 km of stretch untouched in old Kudcemp project, up-gradation of capacity of water supply zones considering the population for the next thirty years and construction of water reservoirs in Marakada and Kana areas.
UGD project includes works of reconstruction of existing UGD system in consideration to the population till 2046, laying of new pumping pipelines from sewage treatment plant to Cassia Church, Jeppinamogaru and other areas, laying of UGD connections in the areas untouched during the first phase of Kudcemp project and connecting of pipes using trench less technology, on main roads.
MCC Opposition leader Sudhir Shetty alleged that the works taken up under first phase of Kudcemp project is only 60 per cent complete and carried out works are unsatisfactory. UGD manholes are cont covered in many areas.
Former Mayor Mahabala Marla urged that steps should be taken to bring water from Malavoor dam as the existing water resource is inadequate to supply water to city. Only then, the 24×7 water supply could be possible. He meanwhile felt for a need to cancel all illegal water connections.
