New Delhi: The Census operations are conducted once in 10 years and the latest after Independence was done in 2010 in the first phase. There are about 120 crores in India and these citizens will be contacted as families with home addresses, in regard to their incomes, education, number of members in every family, employment, caste or creed (Hindu, Muslim, Jain, Christian, Buddhist etc.) and several other details which are later fed into computers and tabulated to bring relevant information on their cultures, traditions, languages known and classes they belong to.
India has 35 states and some Union Territories. The Census will cover sex (man-woman) ratios, religion, literacy and employment, besides income category (paying taxes or not)
The enumerators will cover all the facilities that a family possesses, such as radio-TV-computer-vehicles etc. They will seek information on water/electric supplies, ration card holding/bank accounting/postal savings/insurance policies. These details enrich the census information on numbers of the citizens. Caste details will be taken up from June to Sept., 2011 by 25 lakhs of enumerators for the large national identity project.
