Mangaluru : The region has been contributing well to the national exchequer with the Central Excise and Service Tax Commissionerate targeting a revenue collection of Rs. 11,000 crore by the end of the financial year, said Central Excise Commissioner M. Subramanyam.
Speaking at the Central Excise Day celebrations here, he said that till January this year, the Commissionerate collected Rs. 8,325 crore towards Central Excise and Rs. 563 crore towards Service Tax from the region. There has been an increase of 127 per cent in Central Excise revenue, particularly due to increase of duties on petroleum products, he said, adding that the Service Tax revenue grew by 30.4 per cent.
Endorsing the call for Make in India, he said that India directly moved from primary sector to tertiary sector – service providing – without embarking upon the secondary sector of manufacturing. It is high time India enters the manufacturing sector to boost revenues, he said. Mr. Subramanyam said that the department has rationalised procedures over the years and has come a long-way from ‘inspector-raj’ to tax facilitator.
MRPL Managing Director H. Kumar said he is a witness to the makeover of the department since 1983, when he joined the oil industry. Though there had been resistance from within, the department has adapted itself to the changing needs, he said.
